The olive branch the woman is holding on the right side is a sign of peace and the sword the man is holding on the left side is a sign of attacking which means that America cares about their country. 

This image was shown to everyone to let them know that the Americans wants peace and is defensive if a country bothers to attack them. Francis Hopkinson is important for the Great Seal because he was the signer of the Declaration of Independence. This image explains of what it mean't to be an American overtime by Americans always being very peaceful people and always caring about their country a lot.

The messages are similar in the 21st century by Americans still hoping for peace in their country. Wars that have been happening in America prevent the Americans from keeping their own country peaceful.
